This is the last one of the serie.. This one is of me and my girlfriend drinking coffee.. Check out the others as well of the same serie: [link] [link] [link] [link] [link]

About this serie:

There is a strange thing about those big restaurants you can find on the side of every highway all across Europe. Somehow the atmosphere there appeals to me. Those places always bring me a kind of sense of the transitoriness of life. The monotome sound of the cars flying by next door, the too bright paint, the replaceable furniture, the replaceable waitresses, the customers that soon will be replaced.. A road restaurant is never a destination like other restaurants can be, it's just a necessary stop between point A and point B where you can furfill those basic travelling needs: a refill for the car, a quick bite, stretch those legs, take a piss, drink a coffee and be on your way. Everybody minds his own business. You don't know where the other is heading, and you don't want to know. Nobody stays longer than necessary, except maybe the truck driver, who is the only customer you see talking and laughing with other customers. They are used to the road..

The photos of this serie were all taken somewhere on the high way between Bussels and Paris, near the French border. We were the only customers in that huge restaurant, what really contributed to that strange hollow atmosphere that hangs round in those places..

Still, I have to admit I always like to take a short stop at road restaurants. And not only to take pictures. Those short pitstops let me know I'm on the move again..

I really like this series. The darkness & grittiness make them look like they were taken somewhere in the 1950s or early 1960s -- like something one of the Beat poets would have done.

I like this one, seems at the same time very intimate, because of the cofee scene and yet anonimus because of the framing without faces... nice!!!

Yes Robin, you are probably right.. The poems of Allen Ginsberg and "on the road" from Jack Kerouac have left a not to underestimated impression on me.. The atmosphere the beatniks were able to create in words appealed to me from the moment i got to know their writings.. Thank you for pointing that out Robin! It never was that conscious for me..
